A Family Legacy
Founder of Donut Land in Brunswick
William “Bill” Rienerth Sr. (affectionately known to the local community as “Mr. Bill”) was a beloved cornerstone of the Brunswick community. He founded Donut Land in January 1972, laying the groundwork for a local legacy that has lasted for over five decades.
Early Life and Baking Roots
Baking ran in Bill Rienerth’s blood. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1941, his passion for baking was heavily influenced by his mother, who worked as a baker at the historic Huff Bakery in downtown Cleveland.
Bill got his own start in the industry at the age of 18 when he began baking for Mister Donut. He spent several years honing his craft, learning the complex chemistry required to make dough rise and fry perfectly across changing seasonal temperatures and humidity levels.
Coming to Brunswick
In 1962, Bill and his wife, Carol, moved their family to Brunswick. At the time, they were drawn to the area’s slower pace of life and its welcoming community environment.
A local pizza shop in town used to make and sell donuts, but when that business changed hands, the new owners stopped making them. Recognizing a distinct lack of fresh bakery options in the growing town, Bill decided it was time to step out on his own and open a dedicated donut shop.
Defying the Naysayers
When Bill set out to open Donut Land in late 1971, many locals told him it was a bad business move. At the time, Center Road was just a two-lane road flanked by trees, and critics doubted that a small retail donut shop could survive in a small town like Brunswick.
Undeterred, Mr. Bill pushed forward. He set up shop at 1321 Pearl Road, officially opening the doors in January 1972.
Originally, the storefront was a free-standing building featuring a full glass facade. Within a couple of years, Bill added a brick front to secure the building, and the property owner eventually expanded the surrounding structure to turn it into a integrated strip mall.
Because of his commitment to using high-quality ingredients and traditional, scratch-made methods, Donut Land quickly defied the skeptics and became a community staple.

A Multi-Generational Legacy
Mr. Bill ran the shop with a focus on family and deep community ties. He sadly lost his wife of 58 years, Carol, in May 2020. Less than a year later, on March 4, 2021, Bill Rienerth passed away from cancer at the age of 79.
Before his passing, Bill spent his final 10 months living with his granddaughter, Amanda Rienerth. During that precious time, he officially handed ownership over to her, leaving her with explicit wishes to remodel the shop, update the equipment, and keep the Donut Land legacy alive for at least another 50 years.
Donut Land Today
Amanda faithfully fulfilled her grandfather’s wishes by completely modernizing the original Pearl Road space. Capitalizing on digital platforms, she helped the business go viral, and in November 2023, Donut Land was voted the Best Donut Shop in Northeast Ohio.
That explosive growth triggered a major milestone: Donut Land outgrew its historic home. The business secured a massive 12,000-square-foot facility on Center Road to feature a drive-thru, meeting rooms, and significantly expanded production space—ensuring that Mr. Bill’s 1972 dream continues to feed Brunswick for generations to come.
Every July 7th, the company reflects on the work he inspired by celebrating Bill Rienerth Founder’s Day. This day is one of the key annual and seasonal Donut Land events.
